Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
