Much like Storm Claudia hit the northwest the previous evening, the home side swept United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This result signalled back-to-back league setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to balance league and European soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in opposition, have no similar workload concerns. The City coach made one change from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

Opening Threats

The omens came quickly when Miedema used her power to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Hemp was at the heart of everything from the start, taking advantage of the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of attacks forwards, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the wings but they could not test Yamashita. City, meanwhile, dominated possession, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the season.

They added to their cushion with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was allowed to advance through the center from the back, the field widened for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a accurate ground pass for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the space to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to record a solitary shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their advantage when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine games.
